In southern Ceará, (2h30 from the capital, Fortaleza), set off to discover the charming little fishing village perched on ocher colored cliffs that seem to have been sculpted by the hand of an eccentric artist.
The paradisical settings and very pleasant microclimate have transformed the ancient fishing village of Canoa Quebrada into a seaside resort. This destination was long a well kept secret, but now has an international reputation. This makes Canoa Quebrada a particularly popular destination on the road between between Fortaleza and Natal.

Canoa Quebrada, the cradle of Brazil’s “New Wave”.
In the 1960s, a group of New Wave filmmakers decided to shoot a film in the Northeast.
Following the “Cearense” coastline, they chose a place with a natural decor of ocher colored cliffs eroded by the winds and overlooking a magnificent sandy white beach. Perched on the cliffs, this little fishing village found its existence changed forever.
Today, this hamlet has flourished and become one of the most popular places on the Cearense coast due to its beautiful natural surroundings. Another “treasure” you will find here is the nightlife at weekends, along the main street nicknamed “Broadway” by locals.
Canoa Quebrada is famous for its kite surfing spots (particularly the Jaguaribe estuary) and several clubs offer initiation courses or improvement lessons and rent the kit out to those who have their IKO license. Giant Zip cordes, buggy, quad or horse rides in the dunes, surfing and even a first parachute jump are all amazing experiences waiting for you on the Northeast coast of Brazil!
A Canoa Quebrada vacation – Alluring and lively!
At only 160km from Fortaleza, Canoa Quebrada is a place to unwind and forget the pressures of the modern world.
Hidden from the land by a range of impressive red cliffs, its white sandy beach and emerald waters offer blissful swimming in this tranquil bay on the Atlantic. Spending time here will give you a taste of paradise; this wild and beautiful landscape, dotted with tufts of vegetation that can be seen on the cliffs. To have fun while exploring these natural surroundings we suggest a buggy ride to Ponta Grossa. Follow the cliffs along the beach and ride over the spectacular dunes to discover the small fishing villages, a lot more fun than going by road!
Canoa Quebrada is also a stop on one of our superb Northeast package tours in this region, the Fortaleza/Natal done in a 4×4 or buggy along the beaches!
How will you choose to discover these wonderful locations?
To cover the hundred kilometers along the beaches between the fishing village of Prainha and that of Canoa Quebrada, several options are available.
Our first proposal is a ride in specially equipped 4X4, driven by a professional driver. This is the preferred option for people who prioritize comfort and safety when traveling.
You can also do the same trip aboard a buggy driven by a local professional driver, a small, light vehicle originally invented by surfers to reach the best spots in the dunes. With a turbo engine and open structure, it offers more thrills but also exposes its passengers (especially at the rear) to the elements (wind, sun and ocean spray). Each vehicle can carry 3 passengers in addition to the driver. Thrills guaranteed!
Finally for driving enthusiasts, you can drive your own buggy all the way along the beaches, provided you are of legal age and have a valid driving license. This is the most expensive option because in this case, a driver guide will accompany you in another vehicle. They will show you the way in the labyrinth of tracks and ensure you take the right path along the beach. They will also ensure the proper functioning of your vehicle.
Enjoy a wonderfully peaceful paradise
On the road to “Canoa” as the locals call it, 135km from Fortaleza, we have fallen under the charm of a small 5 star hotel called the Vila Selvagem.
Facing the ocean and next to the charming little fishing hamlet of Pontal do Maceio, it is a dream location.
It also boasts a splendid structure with bungalows scattered in a beautiful garden, two swimming pools and a spa, lounges and all that is expected of a quality hotel. An ideal address for a purely relaxing stay, but also for kite surfers, due to the spots nearby. For more information, see the accommodation section below.
